Caption: Relating to student loan repayment assistance for certain prosecuting attorneys who are employed as part of the border prosecution unit.

This bill would cost taxpayers $5,683,215.00 over five years, according to the Legislative Budget Bureau.
HB 184 establishes a student loan repayment assistance program for prosecuting attorneys who serve in the Texas Border Prosecution Unit. Eligible attorneys must be licensed in Texas and employed as prosecutors in the unit for up to four consecutive years. Repayment assistance will be provided annually at a rate of 25% of the attorney's total student loan balance, with a maximum lifetime benefit of $110,000. The program is funded through state appropriations, grants, gifts, and other available funds, and has a cap of $2 million per biennium. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) is responsible for administering the program and developing related rules.
