Caption: Relating to the removal of certain restrictions imposed on driver's licenses; authorizing a fee. Initially Referred to House Homeland Security, Public Safety & Veterans' Affairs Committee, chaired by a Republican Last Referred to Senate Transportation Committee, chaired by a Republican This bill would cost taxpayers $1,962,000.00 over five years, according to the Legislative Budget Bureau.
HB 647 simplifies the removal of corrective lens restrictions from Texas driver's licenses. A license holder can request the removal by submitting proof of surgically corrected vision (verified by a licensed physician) and paying a fee to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The bill also establishes an electronic or mail-based submission process for this request. However, individuals subject to certain registration requirements are excluded from obtaining updated licenses under this provision. This measure streamlines updates to driver's license records while accommodating medical advancements.
