Caption: Proposing a constitutional amendment regarding the membership of the State Commission on Judicial Conduct and the authority of the commission and the Texas Supreme Court to more effectively sanction judges and justices for judicial misconduct.
Initially Referred to Senate State Affairs Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to House Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence Committee, chaired by a Republican
SJR 27 proposes a constitutional amendment to modify the membership structure and authority of the State Commission on Judicial Conduct in Texas. The amendment increases the number of commissioners and adjusts their composition, aiming to include more diverse representation from different judicial levels and the public. It also strengthens the commission's and the Texas Supreme Court's ability to discipline judges and justices for misconduct by expanding the types of sanctions available and the conditions under which judges can be suspended. The resolution establishes a timeline for the changes to take effect on January 1, 2026, while allowing existing members to continue serving until new members are appointed as vacancies arise.
