HB 2017, also known as "Grayson's Law," proposes to increase the minimum term of imprisonment for individuals convicted of intoxication manslaughter to 10 years if the offense was committed by a person who was unlawfully present in the United States at the time of the offense. The bill also amends the Code of Criminal Procedure to make such offenders ineligible for community supervision, including deferred adjudication. Additionally, the bill prohibits parole or mandatory supervision release for offenders until they have served at least 10 years of their sentence without consideration of good conduct time. The changes would apply to offenses committed on or after the bill's effective date of September 1, 2025.
