Caption: Relating to the inclusion of chronically absent and truant students as students at risk of dropping out of school and the collection and reporting of data regarding those students.
Initially Referred to Senate Education K-16 Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to House Public Education Committee, chaired by a Republican
SB 991 expands the definition of students at risk of dropping out of school to include those who are chronically absent or truant. It mandates that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) collect and publicly report data on chronic absenteeism and truancy at the campus and district levels. The bill also revises reporting requirements for school districts to include the number of students classified as chronically absent, defined as missing more than 10% of instructional days, and those subject to truancy enforcement actions.
