Initially Referred to House Elections Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to Senate State Affairs Committee, chaired by a Republican
HB 2253 modifies election procedures by allowing government entities to cancel elections on measures under certain conditions. If the governor declares a disaster affecting a jurisdiction within 90 days before an election, the local authority can cancel the election if it was scheduled by petition. However, the bill mandates that a new election must be held on the next available uniform election date. The bill ensures that voters still have an opportunity to decide on the measure while allowing for flexibility during emergencies.
