Caption: Relating to a period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious text in public schools.
Initially Referred to Senate Education K-16 Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to House State Affairs Committee, chaired by a Republican
SB 11 allows public school districts and certain charter schools to adopt a policy requiring a daily period of prayer and Bible or other religious text reading. Participation requires signed consent from employees or students' parents, which includes a waiver of legal claims against the school. The policy must ensure that non-participating students and staff are not exposed to prayers or readings, and the practice cannot replace instructional time. The Texas Attorney General is required to provide legal guidance and defend districts that face lawsuits over this policy. School boards must vote on whether to adopt such a policy within six months of the bill's effective date.
