Caption: Relating to the development of a standard method of computing a student's high school grade point average.
Initially Referred to Senate Education K-16 Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to House Public Education Committee, chaired by a Republican
SB 1191 mandates the development and statewide adoption of a standardized high school grade point average (GPA) calculation method. The bill requires (rather than allows) the Texas Commissioner of Education to develop a GPA formula that assigns equal additional weight to Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors, and dual credit courses. All Texas school districts must use this standardized method to compute student GPAs, ensuring consistency in GPA calculations for college admissions and scholarships.
