Caption: Relating to discipline in public schools.
Initially Referred to House Public Education Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to Senate Education K-16 Committee, chaired by a Republican
HB 6 revises public school disciplinary policies, setting new guidelines for student suspensions and removals. It limits the use of out-of-school suspension for students below the third grade unless their behavior presents an immediate safety risk or involves weapons or controlled substances. The bill expands protections for homeless students by prohibiting schools from placing them in out-of-school suspension except under specified circumstances. It also introduces stricter guidelines for disciplinary alternative education program placements, prioritizing in-school interventions over exclusionary discipline. Additionally, it refines policies regarding drug-related offenses on school grounds, distinguishing between minor infractions and severe violations that necessitate removal.
