Last Referred to Senate Education K-16 Committee, chaired by a Republican
HB 5294 imposes new requirements on medical schools in Texas. It mandates that all coursework required for medical degrees be graded using a traditional letter system (A-F) and prohibits pass/fail grading. It also requires medical schools to report proposed revisions to academic or admissions standards to the legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Additionally, the bill bans medical schools from considering race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in admissions and employment decisions, except in cases where sex-based qualifications are necessary for operations. The law applies to admissions beginning in the 2026 spring semester.
