Caption: Relating to the suspension or revocation of a hotel's or motel's certificate of occupancy by a municipality for suspected human trafficking.
Initially Referred to House Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, chaired by a Republican
Last Referred to Senate Local Government Committee, chaired by a Republican
HB 5509 allows municipalities to suspend or revoke the certificate of occupancy for a hotel or motel if there is reasonable cause to believe human trafficking is occurring on the premises. A municipality may act based on notification from law enforcement or its own investigation into suspected violations of Chapter 20A of the Penal Code, which covers human trafficking offenses.
