This bill would cost taxpayers $18,965,423.00 over five years, according to the Legislative Budget Bureau.
SB 2878 makes various changes to the structure and administration of the judicial system in Texas. It establishes new judicial districts in multiple counties, including the creation of the 490th and 491st Judicial Districts in Brazoria County, the 501st and 502nd Judicial Districts in Fort Bend County, and additional courts in Rockwall and Ellis counties. The bill also expands the jurisdiction of statutory county courts in Atascosa, Bowie, Hidalgo, and Potter counties, modifying their powers and responsibilities. Additionally, it introduces new provisions regarding the appointment and duties of visiting judges and court magistrates, revises grand jury qualification standards, and updates various procedural elements related to court administration.
